You’ve probably heard at least one of these expressions many times before: food is medicine, you are what you eat, and yaoshi tongyuan (medicine and food have the same origin). This idea has been conveyed in many ways for a reason. It’s true!

While TCM food cures and nutrition aren’t the primary treatments I provide at patient visits—acupuncture and herbs are her key therapies—I offer food suggestions to every patient upon first visit. Food cures is one of our most under-rated and least recognized tools, but it shouldn’t be.
There are no protocols or specific diets to chew on—calorie counting and diets are curse words, not cures words, in her vocabulary. Some key elements I will spill the beans on include how I emphasize mindful eating, how some simple tips around eating can go a long way, how I talk about nutrition to those with a history of eating disorders, and how expanding someone’s dietary world is healing.
