What is biopuncture?

Biopuncture is the injection of sterile biologic products into specific locations of the body. It is also known as Acupuncture Injection Therapy (AIT) or Point Injection Therapy (PIT). Acupuncture points can be chosen based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles and diagnosis to stimulate an immune response, balance hormones, regulate function, speed healing, and restore energy and vitality. I usually choose trigger points to relieve pain and “knots” in the muscles that many have experienced for years.

What can it treat?

Biopuncture can treat a wide variety of health concerns and chronic complex health issues. Its results can be tremendous, and because it usually uses micro- doses, the goal is to initiate a healing process, not simply suppress symptoms.

Pain and injury

Pain and Injuries Natural Treatment

Natural anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants, and pain relievers can be delivered directly to the site that you need them.

This is one area that biopuncture treatment really shines, and I have many remedies to address pain and injuries, both chronic and acute.

Natural remedies that are anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, and that can reduce swelling can help relieve both acute and chronic pain issues.

Procaine is the only pharmaceutical I inject. I use just a 1% dilution, which I further dilute with one of the natural remedies. Procaine is a local anesthetic.

I choose point locations based on where you have pain so that the remedy doesn’t have far to travel. Pain relief may be instant, may take until the next day, or take a couple of treatments.

I have had stiffness and minimal mobility in my shoulder for over a year. I had heard about biopuncture and was interested in Dr. Carr’s treatment because I do not like to take drugs for pain.

My shoulder had been sore every night for a week. I wasn’t sure what to expect but the biopuncture needle felt similar to an acupuncture needle. That night, I felt a big difference in my shoulder and did not experience the nightly soreness.

I have had a second treatment and I have gained more mobility in my shoulder. Since the treatments are natural and work with my body’s ability to heal itself, I am going to continue along this path.

You don’t have to choose one or the other–flu shot or natural immune boosting shot. For those of you who do not want to get the flu shot, but do want the extra support, it’s possible to receive a natural remedy to boost immune function. If you choose to get the flu shot, these remedies will not conflict (get them a week or more away from the flu shot), but will give you a broader protection, as the flu shot does not target all viruses and does not work against many infections.

Cold and flu season usually hits hardest during our fall and winter months, so I recommend starting cold and flu prevention at the end of August or very beginning of September. For those of you who don’t generally get sick easily, I recommend you get the immune boosting shot once or twice during this season. Those who often get sick more often should receive the booster more often, perhaps as much as once a month.

We live in a toxic world, so even if we avoid alcohol, drugs, smoking, and other intoxicants, toxins are found in our water, air, and household chemicals. If you live a relatively clean life, doing a detox cleanse once a year (I usually suggest springtime), may suffice. If you indulge more frequently in intoxicants, take pharmaceuticals, or work with chemicals, you may need to cleanse more often.

I can choose natural remedies that support liver health and detoxification, while also supporting lymphatic drainage.

Hormone balancing is complex, but here are some simple remedies to complement a complete treatment plan.

For Women

Hormonal balancing for women is complex. Issues of hormonal imbalance can vary widely from irregular periods, menstrual cramping, mood swings, PCOS, and endometriosis to hot flashes, night sweats, and more.

Natural remedies can be an important part of your hormone balancing treatment plan. If water retention is one of your symptoms, a remedy can be selected to help drain that. Another remedy can be used if liver detoxification is what you need. Though almost half of those suffering from anxiety or depression have never gone to a doctor to address it, there are solutions for better mental health.

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, about 20% of Canadians will personally experience a mental illness in their lifetime. Some mental illness is severe and strongly affects a person’s ability to function in daily activities. B12 injections are a fast and easy way to address deficiency.

Vitamin B12 is found in foods like meat, fish, and dairy. Though we’ve consistently recognized that vegetarians, vegans, those with poor digestion, high performance athletes, and the elderly are prone to B12 deficiency, according to the ongoing Framingham Offspring Study, almost 40% of Americans between 26 to 83 years of age are in the “low normal” range for B12 levels. What is injected?

I use sterile biologic products, including both natural and pharmaceutical substances. Natural remedies are my main choice for injectables. I also use B12 and procaine. I select remedies to fit your health issue and problem area.

Does biopuncture hurt?

This is usually one of the first questions and concerns when it comes to any needle. For some, the worry occurs because they have had painful cortisone injections or prolotherapy. The needles I use are very fine and the quantity injected is small, so they are usually relatively comfortable. Some areas can feel a small pinprick, slight burning, pressure or a small amount of aching. Some patients don’t feel anything at all.

It is possible that you will feel a bit sore or tender after treatment, as biopuncture can offer more stimulus than acupuncture alone.

Is biopuncture safe?

Side effects are rare and may include bruising or slight irritation at the injection site, some temporary muscle pain or weakness, or dizziness after treatment. Though some notice immediate benefits, some experience a temporary aggravation of symptoms in the first 24 hours following treatment as the body is being stimulated to make changes. This is an adaptation part of treatment called the “reaction phase.”

Injection therapy has not been evaluated for those who are pregnant and all known or possible allergies must be reported so proper choices for therapeutic remedies can be suitably selected.

Is biopuncture a suitable treatment for you?

That is something that I would determine via a complete and thorough consultation and evaluation. I believe that you are the lead determinant of your own health. I will still recommend lifestyle, food, exercise, and a healthy attitude as your best foundation tools for wellness. Acupuncture, Chinese herbs, supplements, food cures, and biopuncture are the pieces that I can include to your game plan for optimal health and healing.

How do I prepare for biopuncture?

Ideally, do not drink coffee or strong green or black tea for at least an hour before treatment. Ideally, do not take aspirin or other non-prescription blood thinners for 1-3 days before biopuncture. Notify your practitioner if you take prescription blood thinners. If you bruise easily, take 1500mg of vitamin C and 500 mg of bioflavonoids twice daily.

After biopuncture, do not exercise, use a sauna, or use a hot tub for 5 hours after treatment. Do not get a deep tissue massage at the injection site for 2 days after treatment.
