The 25% tariffs came into effect today. For many, this is stressful, as we foresee jobs losses and increases in prices. But enough talk about that, as you don’t need me adding to your stress! Instead, let’s talk about healthy choices for your purchasing in Canada.
Whether you’re choosing to focus on buying Canadian or not, making conscious choices about how you spend your money is always a good thing. I know that many of us get into a buying rut. We sometimes grab things off the shelf or click items into our virtual cart like we’re on autopilot because of habit, time limits, ease, or because we simply don’t know about the alternatives. Sometimes it takes a shake up to make us snap to and pay attention.

You may know this Chinese character for crisis. The first part of the character means “danger” and the second part is often translated to “opportunity,” but I’ve read that it more accurately means “turning point” (correct me if I’m wrong). Either way, there’s something positive about that. A crisis, or even just a challenging situation, forces us to think about how we can respond.
One of the things about buying Canadian is that we have a lot of small- and medium-sized businesses that offer healthier options than the usual American items you might otherwise be purchasing. For example, instead of buying Speed Stick or Secret antiperspirant, why not try Green Beaver aluminum-free antiperspirant or Gentle Moose deodorant. Can you get any more Canadian than that?! Unless there’s a Maple Syrup, Poutine, and Hoser Eh brand, probably not.
Canada is home to some of the world’s most innovative brands in natural health, offering high-quality organic foods, supplements, body care, and household products. Bonus “side effects” to choosing some of these items is that, in some cases, you will be supporting local businesses, reducing your environmental impact, and improving your health.
Note that this is not a comprehensive list of options, but these are brands that I’m familiar with, and I’m probably missing some that I use daily and have forgotten, so feel free to comment with your fave Canadian healthy product brands. 😊
