Welcome back to
Active Life Health Clinic's
October's Newsletter.

October is the scary month (because of Halloween, of course)! Today I went to pick up some groceries with my husband and he nearly jumped out of his skin when for a split second he thought the fake spider and web hanging off of the till were real.

I like spiders. The "bugs" that I dislike are the kind that give us runny noses, sore throats, fevers, headaches, achy muscles, nausea, and just generally make us sick. If you want to avoid the flu and limit your experience with colds this fall and winter, read on for a
flu shot alternative and treatment.

Another thing I find frightful are the number of toxins that we are bombarded by daily. That's why I recommend regular cleanses. Check out the
options for detoxification listed below.

Something new…

If you haven't heard yet, I'm offering biopuncture treatments. For more information, check out my newsletter from September: September newsletter (biopuncture)

Biopuncture can treat a number of health conditions including pain, immune system weakness, allergies, fatigue, and complex health issues.

Alternative Flu Shot

No one likes to be sick. Sure, you may get a day off from work, but when you can't breathe through your nose, your head is pounding, your body can't decide between needing every blanket in the house and sweating with little to no movement, your throat doesn't even like your own saliva, the simple thought of food makes you gag, and even sleeping makes you tired, you would much rather be working than suffering through this.

Last year we were told to be fearful of a horrible H1N1epidemic. This year we will still encounter the flu, but we've heard little to nothing about it. This year's flu vaccine will inoculate us against the H1N1 swine flu as well as the seasonal flu, but many are choosing not to get the flu shot.

A Consumer Report survey of 1500 people aged 18 and older shows that many, including those at high risk for the flu, such as health care workers, are choosing not to get this year's flu shot.

According to WebMD Health News:

"The findings echo those of a series of surveys by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, which showed that 43% of Americans won't get the flu shot this year, and that one-third of moms won’t vaccinate their kids.

In the new poll, 28% of health care workers said they didn't plan on getting the flu vaccine this year. Just 45% of people who were considered at risk for the flu said they would get vaccinated this year, meaning a majority of people with diseases that place them at high risk for the flu and flu-related complications won't get a flu shot.

People aged 65 and older are considered at high risk for flu based on their age, but just 51% said they plan on getting the flu vaccine this year."
The main reasons why people are opting out are that they believe that the swine flu epidemic was over-hyped last year, they have a concern over side effects, a concern about the safety of the flu shot, and that they don't believe it works anyway.

Whether you plan on getting a flu shot or not, it is important to boost your immune system to help you through cold and flu season. Of course most of us want to avoid getting sick because we don't want to feel awful. We also want to avoid getting sick so that we don't pass it on to those whose bodies have a much harder time recovering--the very young, the elderly, the immune compromised.

One solution is to get an alternative flu shot. I have mentioned that I can do biopuncture, the injection of natural remedies. This includes some immune -boosting natural medicines. Pascoleucyn is a remedy that has a long safety record of 60 years. It can be administered by injection (really, it's not painful) or taken orally. Telus offices in some of their locations have been using it for the last 6 years as a way to reduce employee sick days and it has been working.

I'm also using Lymphdiaral, Gripp-Heel, and Echinacea Comp for cold and flu prevention and/or treatment, depending on the individual's situation.

The goal with this sort of treatment is to boost the body's own natural defences against a wide variety of bacteria and viruses, not just against the few viruses that we believe are the most likely flu viruses for this year. It's a great option for those who don't get the flu shot. And, you can still choose to get the conventional flu shot to reduce your likelihood that you'll succumb to those most likely culprits while you also choose to get the alternative flu shot to keep your immune system strong against everything else.

If you would like me to have an alternative flu shot day on November 11th (a stat holiday), please let me know. Otherwise, please let me know if you would like to schedule your own time or if you have any questions. drcarr@activetcm.com
