Welcome back to
Active Life Health Clinic's
January Newsletter.
A new
decade!
Happy 2010 everyone! 2010.
That just sounds so good to me. Not sure why,
maybe because of the zeros, but it sounds like a
good number. It sounds like a fresh start.
Statistics show that up to 95% of people who say
that they’re going to do something don’t
actually take action. Despite a heap of good
intentions, they don't actually act.
One example comes from a recent study of people
who bought “Teach Yourself” language courses.
The following statistics were reported per 100
courses sold:
-
40 were never taken out of the wrapper
-
50 were listened to no further than track 1 of
CD 1
-
8 listened no further than the first CD
-
Only 2 went on to complete the whole course

Helping You Help Yourself...
1.
Things I've
learned about making goals reality:
Who said these quotes? See bottom of email for
answers:
- "Just Do It"
- "Make it so"
- "How soon 'not now' becomes 'never'"
- "Success is not final; failure is not
fatal; it is the courage to continue that
counts."
- "He is able who thinks he is able."
- "When it becomes obvious that the goals
cannot be reached, don't adjust the goals,
adjust the action steps."
- "It's kind of fun to do the impossible."
- "The difference between a successful
person and others is not a lack of strength,
not a lack of knowledge, but rather in a
lack of will."
I’ve been asking my patients if they make New
Year resolutions. Most have said that they do
not. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have
goals. In fact, every person I spoke with has
goals, even if they were not yet specific. I
liked what one of my patients said. “I
don’t make New Year resolutions. I am my
resolutions.” Another of my patients
stated something similar, saying that when he
feels he wants to do something, he just does it.
This in itself is a great goal to have. If you
want to accomplish something, work on it now.
Not tomorrow. Not next week. Not when you have
more time (we all know that that never seems to
happen).
Some of the stuff I have been taught, in brief:
- If you find yourself making resolutions or
goals that you have a hard time turning into
reality, perhaps you could review your
motivations. Ask yourself
“why?”.
Why do you want to … (you fill in the
blank)? Really get to the root of “why”. You
might say you want to exercise more so that
you can lose weight, but what is really the
issue? Why do you want to lose weight? Is it
so you can do something that you could not
do now, such as run a marathon? Or because
you want to live longer? Why?
- Break your goal down into bite-sized,
manageable steps.
Celebrate
each achievement.
- Set
priorities. Make time for the
things that are really important to you.
Sometimes those little unimportant things,
such as filtering through and forwarding
those joke emails that we all receive, can
take over just because those tasks float to
the top of our attention.
- Tell people about your goals.
A goal is not
like a wish. A wish is thought to
become less likely to
happen
if you tell someone. For goals,
accountability makes follow through more
likely.
-
Be
grateful Thank yourself for your
small successes. Thank those around you for
their support. Thank your challenges for
pushing you to improve yourself.
If you need proof that goal-setting works, think
of those athletes that will be showing their
stuff at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics and
Paralympics this winter.
Still waiting for the right moment? Perhaps you
need a sign. Something like a Blue Moon
happening the same night that we shifted into a
new decade perhaps? Well then, no more excuses.
December 31, 2009 turned to January 1, 2010
during a Blue Moon!

3.
Be on
TV
How about this for motivation? I was contacted
by a production company looking for families
interested in participating on "X-Weighted" to
transform themselves to healthier lifestyles
under the guidance of various experts.
The organizer, Crystal Smith, wrote to me:
"We produce a healthy
lifestyles television series on Slice called
X-Weighted. We have heard some wonderful things
about Active Life and how you have helped many
people onto a healthier path. We are filming
this year in Vancouver and hoped that you might
know of some families that could benefit from
the show. 13 families will be selected in
Calgary, Vancouver and Kelowna, each will have a
one hour documentary produced that is filmed
sporadically over a 6 month period with experts
that can help them reach their goals. We will
follow families this year (kids that are between
8-17 years old) to see the bond that is
developed when parents and children work
together to reach their goals, challenges are
conquered, healthy skill sets are created and
physical transformations are made: stories that
will inspire audiences across Canada."
If you personally know of
any families that might be interested in
participating please feel free to pass along my
email to them. If they could email me a few
sentences describing their family (include ages/
weights), what kind of challenges they want to
overcome, interesting events that we could
include in their story over the next 6 months
and everybody’s goals to
csmith@anaid.com."
