Welcome back to Active Life Health Clinic's February newsletter.

If you follow the Chinese calendar, then you have just recently celebrated the start of a new year.

If you faltered at getting a great start to the new year that started January 1st, then here's your chance to try again!

We now welcome the Year of the Earth Rat.  Western culture does not generally consider the rat to be a virtuous animal as we often associate it with sneakiness.  If you insult someone by calling them a rat, the word "dirty" usually starts off the attack.  According to the Chinese zodiac, however, the sign of the rat holds many very positive traits.  Read on to find out how this year can benefit you.

What a win-win situation!  In honour of Vancouver Aquarium's soon to be unveiled Year of the Frog exhibit, I'm going to donate 50% of the income for far-infrared sessions booked before the end of this month.  That's a short time, I know, but more than enough time for you to call or email us.  Read below for more information.

If  you would like to be removed from our health e-newsletter list, please let us know at office@activetcm.com.

Helping you help yourself!

My goal:
To work in partnership with you to bring you to your optimal health.

My focus:
Ongoing health, not just temporary relief.

This is active health.

Year of the Rat -- A Time for Renewal

Being the first year of the cycle, the Year of the Rat is considered to be a great time for renewal.  It is a good year to begin a new job, get married, launch a project, and/or make a fresh start.  For me this means looking at your life and figuring out where improvements can be made, both with your health and your lifestyle.

What areas of your health would you like to improve?

- Remember Britney Spears' song "Toxic"?  If you think you might be just that then think about starting off with a new clean slate and detoxify.  Re-read my January newsletter for details on that.

- Would you like to eliminate allergies? Start working on that before the season starts.  I've already noticed buds in some trees. I can help you get lessen the impact of and perhaps eliminate your allergies.

- Are you still putting up with pain? Why? Spring is on its way and wouldn't you like to be able to be active without suffering? Acupuncture is recognized by the Arthritis Society, the World Health Organization (WHO), the National Institute of Health, and a growing number of mainstream health professionals and researchers as being effective for the treatment of pain.  Things to note: the results are not intended to be a quick fix; acupuncture helps heal, not just sedate symptoms; it is NOT painful.

- Perhaps you could use some help choosing healthy foods?  Just because the package shows something that SEEMS healthy, doesn't mean it is.  Perhaps you've read some of my food packaging rants.  Examples of words to look out for include "harvest wheat", "fat-free", "sugar-free",  "lite", "light", "diet", etc.   Learn how to read the labels on foods and supplements with a more discriminating eye.

Year of the Frog -- A Fundraiser

For about 25 years now, scientists have noted that the brightly coloured harlequin frogs of Central and South America started dying off in the cloud forests. It is obvious that these frail creatures with their semi permeable skin are in trouble as 2/3 of the 110 known harlequin frog species have gone extinct during that time.

These frogs seem to be dying because of an increase in environmental temperature and the increase of a fungus called chytrid which attacks their skin. Like the canaries that were used in coal mines to determine dangerous levels of methane gas, frogs are especially sensitive to climate change and so are considered an indicator species of what our future may hold if we don't make the necessary changes. Frogs devour thousands of insects and also are important prey for birds, reptiles, and mammals. Their disappearance would contribute to an imbalance in our ecosystems.

As you may know, I am inspired to support environmental causes. This is because my role is to optimize health, and the health of all of us is strongly connected to and impacted by our environment. This is the information on an exhibit that will soon be unveiled at the Vancouver Aquarium:

Aquariums and zoos around the world are becoming more aware and concerned with the state of the world's frog populations and the Vancouver Aquarium is no exception. As part of an ongoing effort to promote public awareness of frogs and their important role in the wetland ecosystem, the Aquarium will be opening a new exhibit that showcases both local and exotic frog species and their environments. This exhibit will be unveiled to the public in time for February 29, 2008: Leap Year Day.

The public exhibit and education messaging are intended to build public support for recovery activities by increasing understanding and promoting responsible behaviour towards wetlands and increasing awareness about amphibians in general.

So, what can you do, you ask?

Isn't it ironic...Detoxify your body through your skin using the heat of our far infrared sauna to improve your health at the same time as you contribute to a better environment for frogs and for us. I will donate half of all income from the use of our far infrared sauna individual sessions and packages purchased on or before February 29th

To read more about the benefits of the sauna, check out: www.activetcm.com/Infrared_Sauna.htm

To purchase your sauna sessions, please contact us at 604-783-2846 or office@activetcm.com. Ask about our secure online payments if you would like to make the payment on your credit card without needing to make it to our clinic before the deadline.

Healthy Workplace Exercise:
Seated Twist

Benefits – reduces back tension, increases spinal flexibility, detoxifies internal organs, increases circulation to nerve endings along spine, improves energy level and much more.
This exercise must be done on an armless chair.
Seated%20Twist%20in%20chair.jpgInstructions:
(1)    Sit sideways on a chair so that your legs are over one side and your right hip is as close to the chair back as possible.  Sit tall and press the small of your back towards the wall behind you.  Keep your shoulders relaxed and down and the back of your neck long.
(2)    Inhale to lengthen your spine, and as you exhale, turn to face over the chair back, taking hold of each side.  Make sure you are twisting with your whole spine.  Your chest and stomach should feel like they are twisting, not just your neck and head.
(3)    Stay here for a few moments, breathing deeply and slowly.  As you inhale, grow taller.  As you exhale, twist a bit deeper.
(4)    Exhale to come out of the pose and repeat on the other side.

Be Careful:  If you are pregnant, twist very gently and don’t go too deep into the twist.
